Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that provide measurable impact. Our vision is to bring a Big Brother or Big Sisters to every child who needs and wants one.

Description

We match at-risk area youth ages 6-16 with mentors who have similiar personalities and interests in order to provide a positive role model. We serve Allegany, Garrett, Mineral, Bedford, Somsert, Hardy, Grant, and Hampshire Counties.

We have two programs available, a community based program and a lunch based program. The community based program is where a volunteer is matched with a child, and they meet up and do activities together once or twice a month. Playing basketball, baking, watching sports, going to a play, or hiking are a few examples of activities that our Bigs and Littles do. A vehicle and car insurance is needed for this program.

The lunch buddy program is where our mentors meet with elementary students once a week for lunch and recess. Many mentors spend recess tutoring, working on special projects, playing games, and talking. This program is currently only available in Allegany and Mineral County.

All volunteers must be willing to comply with an in-person interview and have a clean background check (speeding tickets and traffic violations are not a bar for our program).

HUD Housing Complaint Line

Multifamily Housing Clearinghouse

The Multifamily Housing Clearinghouse (MFHC) is a source of information on initiatives, programs and policies of HUD’s Office of Multifamily Housing Programs. It can be accessed by dialing 1-800-MULTI-70 (1-800-685-8470). The line is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time by customer service representatives trained to answer questions from the public, to receive requests for Multifamily publications, and to make appropriate referrals. For example and depending on the nature of the inquiry, callers could be referred directly to subsidized rental properties in their area or to their local Housing Authority. Developers may be referred to Multifamily Mortgages. Other callers could be referred to a local HUD Field Office or to HUD’s Office of Inspector General.

The 800 line also features the Multifamily Housing Complaint Line, which assists HUD by helping to identify owners and managers who are not properly maintaining their properties or who are engaged in illegal practices. Staff address resident concerns directly, make appropriate referrals, or, if warranted, fax or email the complaint to the appropriate HUD Field Office for action.

MFHC staff also take orders for Office of Multifamily Housing Programs publications, including:

–   Resident Rights and Responsibilities, a brochure outlining what residents of HUD-assisted and -insured properties should expect, are responsible for and what they should and should not tolerate.

–   Service Coordination: A How-to Guide, a handbook for owners and managing agents of housing developments interested in developing and implementing service coordination under HUD guidelines.

Multifamily Housing Complaint Line

The Multifamily Housing Complaint Line is a service provided by HUD’s Multifamily Housing Clearinghouse (MFHC) that enables residents of HUD-insured and -assisted properties and other community members to report complaints with a property’s management concerning matters such as poor maintenance, dangers to health and safety, mismanagement, and fraud. It can be accessed by dialing 1-800-MULTI-70 (1-800-685-8470).

Callers to this line can speak to MFHC information specialists, in both English and Spanish, who will help them resolve their problem. MFHC staff explain how to more effectively report problems to building management, answer questions about residents’ rights, and refer callers to local Public Housing Agencies and other organizations, if needed. If a complaint is serious enough to bring to HUD’s attention, MFHC information specialists write up a report on the problem and fax or email it to the appropriate HUD Field Office for action.

The Multifamily Housing Complaint Line supports HUD’s enforcement efforts by empowering tenants and community residents to act as HUD’s eyes and ears to ensure safe, decent and sanitary housing.
